About

Umoja Hope Restoration is a refugee-led organization based in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, Uganda, founded by Upendo Shukuru.

Rooted in lived experience, the organization works to restore dignity, strengthen community leadership, and support vulnerable groups. Through youth engagement, savings groups, and community initiatives, Umoja builds cooperation and resilience, helping people move from being seen as vulnerable to becoming active contributors shaping their own future.

Why beauty matters here

Beauty lives in everyday acts of cares: planting trees, decorating homes, gathering in community.

When, as a community, we focus on beauty, everything changes. We stop focusing on what’s missing and instead focus on what we have, what we value, and what we can build.

“When we rise together, we restore more than livelihoods. We restore hope, dignity, and the belief that our lives and our community are worth investing in.”

What this partnership will explore

  • How everyday community practices create belonging and shared identity

  • How local leadership and savings groups strengthen resilience and cooperation

  • How cultural expression shapes perceptions of beauty and dignity

  • How community-led design can transform shared spaces into places of pride

“When refugees are trusted and supported, they lead meaningful change. We are not only people in need, we are partners capable of building solutions that strengthen our communities.
