Can beauty save the world?

It is saving refugees.

You've donated to crisis response and maybe you’ve even volunteered.

But things seem to be getting worse not better for refugees.

What actually works?

120 million refugees have lost their homes.

The problem

Each year, less than 1% of refugees will have access to permanent housing.

Most are living in places that were never meant to be homes, for decades.

But here's what you might not know:

Refugees are already using beauty to survive.

We’ve seen and heard stories from refugees, all across the world.

To rebuild home, to sustain their lives and to recover.

Not because it's frivolous, because it's essential.

What refugees are saying

“For us, refugee-led does not only mean that we understand the reality - many people understand the reality - what makes it different is that we choose to step forward despite it...we want other refugees — especially young people — to see that stepping forward is possible. That they do not need permission to begin. That even in uncertainty, they can organize, create, and lead.”

— Faduma Abukar Awes, Addis Ababa Ethiopia, Shama Institute for Cultural Exchange

“I want people to know that refugees are not only survivors. We are leaders, creators, and providers.

With the right space and opportunity, we can build strong initiatives, support our families, and lift our communities with dignity. Refugee-led work means we lead our own future.

— Didier Maliki, Executive Director - UBUCHANGE, Kampala & Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, Uganda

“When a space feels cared for, people feel valued. When it feels forgotten, people begin to feel forgotten too.

A transformed space…reminds us that even here, in displacement, we can build something meaningful, something beautiful, and that our future can be shaped by our own hands.

— Melance Niyonizigiye, Founder & Executive Director, Spirit, Peace and Solidarity, Mahama Refugee Camp, Rwanda

“Communication was top-notch and the final outcome was even better than we imagined. A great experience all around.”

When I walk through [our] camp, I see beauty in how people create belonging—through savings groups, shared ideas, traditional dances, handmade crafts, planted trees, and everyday acts of care.

Our community is not defined only by hardship, but by cooperation, creativity, and pride. When refugees’ leadership and effort are trusted and celebrated, beauty becomes a source of hope and collective ownership.

— Upendo Shukuru, Founder Umoja Hope Restoration | Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, Uganda
