About

UBUCHANGE is a refugee-led initiative in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement that supports artisans and entrepreneurs to build sustainable livelihoods through creativity.

Founded by Didier Maliki, the organization helps refugees develop market-ready products, strengthen digital marketing skills, and grow small businesses. Rooted in the belief that refugees are creators and providers, UBUCHANGE combines economic empowerment with community healing through shared creative practices and cultural expression.

Why beauty matters here

Beauty is not separate from survival. Through craftsmanship and design, creative skills become income, transforming artistry into economic opportunity and long-term self-reliance.

“Refugees are not waiting for aid. We are creators, providers, and leaders, building businesses, supporting our families, and shaping our future with dignity through the work of our own hands.”

What this partnership will explore

  • How creative livelihoods contribute to dignity, income, and self-reliance

  • How everyday cultural practices shape perceptions of beauty and belonging

  • How shared creative spaces support healing and social connection

  • How artisans can lead community-driven transformation through design and storytelling

“When people create with their hands and see the value of their work, they begin to see their own value. Creativity becomes not just income, but a path to dignity and belonging.”
