About

Spirit of Peace and Solidarity (SPS) is a refugee-led organization in Rwanda founded by Melance Niyonizigiye.

Born from lived experiences of vulnerability and invisibility, SPS works to ensure that no one is left behind in times of hardship. The organization supports communities through collective action, environmental initiatives, and talent development, helping people move from isolation toward dignity, connection, and self-reliance.

Why beauty matters here

In places shaped by trauma and uncertainty, beauty becomes part of healing.

Trees, gardens, art and clean and cared-for spaces—things like these change how people feel about themselves and their community.

“Refugee-led means we are not waiting to be saved. We are transforming our own home, creating dignity, opportunity, and hope through the strength and creativity within our community.”

What this partnership will explore

  • How environmental and creative interventions support healing and well-being

  • How hidden talents can be identified and developed into community assets

  • How community-led beautification strengthens ownership and pride

  • How nature and design can reshape perceptions of refugee spaces

“When people see their environment transformed, they begin to see themselves differently, not as forgotten, but as capable of creating beauty, dignity, and a future they can shape.”
